When one gets a certain eye pain, they either seek medical help from their ophthalmologist or perform eye pain treatment on their own. When the eye pain subsides, though most would not bother to know the causes of the eye pain, the total well-being of their eyes and what eye pain symptoms should be treated by professionals and those that can do on their own.
Causes of eye pain are either ocular pain or orbital pain. Ocular pain comes from the other structures of the eye surface, while orbital pain is that deep, dull ache in the eye or behind it. Orbital pain is often caused by eye diseases, while ocular pain causes temporary vision impairments and sight deficiencies.
The most common ocular pain would be conjunctivitis wherein the tissue lining the inner eyelid and cornea is deprived of moisture. Also known as pinkeye, there is usually a mild eye pain in this, often followed by itching and redness due to allergic reactions.

Today there is approximately 40 million contact lens users in the United States, of which, 75% have at a time or two reported allergic reactions. Due to allergies, different forms of eye pain are a frequent complaint. Any ophthalmologist would say that an allergy could easily be treated or better yet, prevented, with the proper eye care and right information about allergies.
Allergies are reactions to allergens or non-parasitic antigens from dust, dust mites, pollen, mold and many others. When these allergens get into the eyes, they cause eye pain, itchiness, redness or inflammation. Allergies also bring about other eye infections, pain, discomfort, teary-eyes, and some even have bouts with blurry vision. Now, contact lenses are attractive to allergens as they act like sponges. Allergens begin to build up in the contact lens because of inappropriate treatment; in this case allergies worsen the condition of the eyes.

One common type of eye pain is the dry eye syndrome which most people in different age range suffer from. Symptoms of dry eyes include redness, blurred vision, and dryness, sensitivity to light, excessive tearing and intolerance to contact lens among others.
Often referred to as keratitis sicca or keratoconjunctivitis, this eye problem is due to insufficient production of tears. The three important components of the tears are the lacrimal gland, meibornian glands and the goblet cells that keep every mixed component together. Dry eyes may occur when one of the three glands do not function well.
Who usually suffers dry eye syndrome?
An estimated 10%-30% of people generally suffer dry eyes which are equivalent to approximately 90 million Americans. Those who are above 40 years old especially women are more likely to experience this problem.

There are many instances where one gets their eyes injured. It is best to know one’s own eyes and the eye pain they are experiencing, along with proper eye pain treatment when injuries happen. This way, when you are in a situation where your sense of sight is threatened or harmed, you know what to do before your ophthalmologist gets to your aid.
Before that, understand that in every eye injury, it should be determined if the symptoms are intraorbital or intraocular. If the vision is decreased and experiencing severe eye pain with double vision, then there is an intraorbital situation in your eyes. On the other hand, intraocular renders eye pain and decreased vision, but at an earlier stage, there may be no symptoms at all. Take note also of ultraviolet keratitis wherein there is redness and eye pain, sensitivity to light and that “something in the eye” sensation.
